This convo took place between me and my summer camp students. They range in age from 11 to 12.
Adult: So, how do you feel about Judge Sotomayor? The first Latina woman nominated to the Supreme Court.
Child #1: I think it’s cool.
Child #2: I don’t know what the big deal is. She isn’t the first (Latina) woman to do that.
Adult: What do you mean? Well who was the first?
Child #2: Maria Lopez
Adult: Who???
Child #2: You know… Judge Maria Lopez. She comes on right after Judge Joe Brown.
